Stanford vs. Berkeley
May 23rd, 2007
Did you know that Athena Mentor sends out a weekly (weakly weekly) admissions quiz? The answers are posted here on the blog. In fact, this post answers the quiz question, "Which Tower is Which?" You blog-only readers tend to get the answers before you get the question. Why not add some suspense to your life and sign up for the newsletter at:
Of course, the blog contains the quiz and more, because all of life cannot be fit into the quiz genre–except perhaps on Judgment Day, when we will all face the Big Question: "Why were you so . . . inadequate?"
For now, let’s stick to a question that can be answered: "Which Tower is Which?"
Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley are located on opposite sides of San Francisco Bay.
Stanford’s Hoover Tower (left) is the crowning glory of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace. “Its largest bell is inscribed, ‘For Peace Alone Do I Ring.’”

The University of California at Berkeley’s Sather Tower (right) houses The Class of 1928 Carillon. It is a full concert carillon with sixty-one bells. If you are looking for a break from your studies at Berkeley, you can apply for free carillon lessons. No, really!
Yes, Athena Was There
May 23rd, 2007
Yes, I personally took the photos of the towers, below. Athena has been traveling for almost a month, in a blogless fog. This means, however, that I have a lot to report about the universities I visited–universities you care about. First, the answers to this week’s quiz about the towers. You definitely want to know those towers.
Which Tower is Which?

These two towers rise high above competing universities across a famous bay. Name those universities! And for extra credit—name the towers!
Community Service Not
May 19th, 2007
Most of the resumes international applicants bring to Athena Mentor have a gaping hole in the category of community service. It’s just not there!
Non-US applicants find it hard to believe how seriously Americans take community service. Often, the very idea comes as a surprise. I live in Germany, and the traditional form of a German resume (Lebenslauf) is a straightforward list of employment, internships and education. This mirrors what German employers find relevant.
American universities, on the other hand, find community service extremely relevant.
First, it is an indication of character.
Second, it is a chance to develop leadership skills.
We’ll talk more about this. In the meantime, I suggest you look into opportunities to put your skills to work on behalf of someone else–today!

TOEFL Scramble 21 March
The Test of English as a Foreign Language is another item on the (sigh) to-do list of most non-US applicants to American universities. Why not get it over with this spring? It’s a great warm-up for the more advanced test (SAT, GMAT, GRE or other) you’ll probably be taking soon. To get you in the mood, here’s the TOEFL Scramble sent today to subscribers to Athena Mentor’s Quiz of the Week. For extra credit, pencil in a synonym for each word!
giird
haennce
ctonuoieisscn
badctiae
ebntiorleal
carciha
zhpyahaardl
Ready? These frequently-tested words are:
conscientious: scrupulous
abdicate: relinquish
intolerable: unbearable
archaic: ancient
haphazardly: randomly
rigid: stiff, inflexible
enhance: heighten, increase
Athena recommends that you make these words part of your working vocabulary by writing one sentence per word–right now!
Whoops, my bad (url)
May 19th, 2007
I came back from a week in Mallorca (yes) to learn that last week’s newsletter contained a typo in the url of this blog. If you’ve gotten this far, you’ve probably figured out the correct url, which appeared in the newsletter of 14 March. I apologize for the mistake.
Thanks for your patience while I grapple with phrases like, “how to turn your blog into a widget.”

I’m considering moving my nascent blog to blogger, so the next few posts will be catch-ups. We’ll see how it goes.
